Facebook ReviewThe Stowes
Hello friends! You have found The StoweAways!
Owned and operated in rural Morgan County by husband and wife, Tommy & Kerry Stowe.
The StoweAways is a niche operation in the animal care industry, offering personalized in-home dog boarding and 24-hour care. Tommy and Kerry are career experts in dog behavior and body language, with a combined 35+ years experience in professional dog boarding and training. We chose our farm in Madison, Georgia as the backdrop for our life-long dream, The StoweAways. While we operate with a GDA Kennel License, we are about as far from a “kennel” as you can get. Our clients and their dogs are welcomed into our home and treated as part of the family. We are in the business of building real bonds with our dogs, and long-term personal relationships with their owners. Our partnerships often last a dog’s lifetime…and that may be the best, and the hardest part. We invite you to come meet us and see what we do!

Much of our success with our boarders is a result of our slow and steady approached when introducing a new dog to our home and pack.
Step 1: Meet & Greet appointment here at our farm. This is a one-on-one opportunity to meet each other. Your dog is welcomed to explore the yard and our house, while you get the tour and we discuss your dog’s care. These last between 30 minutes to an hour, and your pup goes home with you. Please submit our Meet & Greet form to get scheduled.
Step 2: Trial Day of Daycare. Think of it as your dog’s first day of school, they’ll be excited to come in, and excited to go home. During this first day of daycare Tommy will evaluate your dog’s ability to socialize, identify play style and begin matching them with appropriate friends. We will begin acclimating them to our routines in our home, and start our bonding process with them. From here we are ready to start overnight visits!
Step 3: Some dog’s may do better with a short visit of 1-2 nights as their first overnight experience. Our Trial Day is our opportunity to determine if this will be necessary, or if your dog is adjusting well enough to jump right into longer visits.

We board year round! This is our full time passion project. It’s a good thing we’re homebodies, we have boarders with us most nights of the year and board over all major holidays. We take one week off per year for our own family vacation, usually towards the end of September.
CLOSED SUNDAYS: We book drop-off and pick-up appointments Monday - Saturday every week. We CLOSE to client appointments on Sundays, to give ourselves our one “day off” per week. Boarders are welcome to stay over Sundays and receive all the same care.We schedule drop-off and pick-up appointments as early as 7 am, as late as 5 pm. The time of your drop-off or pick-up appointment will NOT affect our price. We charge per night regardless of arrival or departure time.

Absolutely. One of the benefits of boarding your dog with us is that you have direct contact with us at any time during your dog’s visit. Every few days we send detailed updates with collected photos and videos. Between updates know that no news is always good news, that you are the first person to know if we have any problem or concern, and that you are welcome to check in with us any time you’d like.

To board, socialize and participate in group time we require up to date:
Rabies
Distemper
Bordetella - We do not mix dogs who have received the Bordetella vaccine for at least 14 days post vaccination, due to the potential of shedding live virus to other guests.
With our low volume design we are able to accommodate dogs that may be on a reduced-vaccination plan with their vet. These dogs are welcome to board as “out-alone” guests, not mixed with our general population of dogs. However, we do require a minimum of an up to date Rabies vaccine for all guests, in compliance with our GDA Kennel License requirements.

Yes, but we stick to a few rules to keep everyone safe and cared for. An un-neutered male may be a perfect gentleman himself, but his presence can alter the moods of the dogs around him. An un-spayed female, even out of season, can cause competition and frustration in the dogs around her. We consider intact dogs on a case by case basis, but in general:
All intact adults over 1 year of age fall into our “Special-Needs” boarding option, at a rate of $75 per night, and will be cared for on an “out-alone” schedule, kept separate from our general population of socializing dogs.
Intact males under 1 year of age will be welcome to socialize until they begin to reach sexual maturity, which we judge by their behavior with and around other dogs. Males typically “age out” of playgroups between 6 months - 1 year of age and can return when neutered.
Intact females under 1 year of age are welcome to participate in playgroups until their first birthday. Females in heat at any age are cared for on an “out-alone” schedule.

Unfortunately, not in our bed with us…as many of them would prefer. Haha!
We accommodate a variety of sleeping arrangements depending on your dog’s specific needs. We use built in den spaces for our smaller dogs, and large built in suites for our big kids and families. We have crate options for dogs that crate at home, or maybe have some destructive habits. And we accommodate dogs who do not want to crate, with several guest room type spaces available for loose boarding. We try to recreate your dog’s home life as much as possible, while maintaining our ability to separate dogs as needed. All dogs are assigned a space for their reservation and use that space to sleep overnight, eat their meals, and nap between play time and family time. See our gallery for a good representation of our accommodations.

We provide all bowls for food and water, and can provide slow-feeders if needed.
We will want you to pack:Enough of your dog’s own food to get them through the visit. A little extra is always good to have incase travel plans change.
Any medications or supplements they are on, including any as-needed medications they may need.
A bed or blanket or T-shirt from home. This brings the smell of home into their den space here, bringing extra comfort and contentment.
Any must-have favorite toy, or favorite treat/chew sticks from home if your dog enjoys them as part of their normal routine.

NO! Gosh no…on purpose! Morgan County has some wonderful dog trainers who we know well and love dearly, and we are happy to refer you. They will be the first to tell you that dog training is not about training a dog, it’s about training the owners! We are career experts in our field, but prefer to stick to the dog side of the dog industry. We use our extensive knowledge in dog behavior and body language to provide the safest, most comfortable home away from home for our guests. We specialize in temperament evaluations, group socialization, and anxiety cases, but we avoid the title of “dog trainers” as a matter of preference.

Haha! In all seriousness it is probably the most common question we get asked. We’ve heard the amazement that we actually live this way, a house full of ten dogs seems crazy to some folks! The real answer is “It’s just love.” We love dogs, we love making them happy and they bring us great joy. We are satisfied and fulfilled when our dogs genuinely bond with us and can’t wait to see us. And we love all the love we get back from our happy clients. To hear the difference we’ve made for some people fills us with so much gratitude, that we get to do what we love, and make a positive impact doing it. We’ve had many clients say that it’s hard to describe what we do, until you see it in person. I think that’s true :) So come meet us!
